May 2023 | Lied von der Erde and subscription concerts with the Hofer Symphoniker

This month, Martijn makes his debut with the HERMESensemble in Belgium and will conduct them in Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde". The music will be performed in the orchestra pit of the Red Hall in De Singel, since these concerts feature a staged version by Philippe Quesne, which was first performed at the Wiener Festwochen. Christina Daletska and Michael Pflumm will perform as soloists. Later this month he returns to the Hofer Symphoniker for a program with music by Weill and Jolivet, together with trumpet soloist Selina Ott. 


March 2023 | Last-minute stand-in for Kristiina Poska and Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen

Six hours before the first concert of the "Pastorale" concert tour by Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, Martijn was asked to step in for the indisposed Kristiina Poska. The program included a world premiere by Estonian composer Ülo Krigul, Walton's viola concerto (which was performed by Nils Mönkemeyer) and Beethoven's sixth symphony. The audience in Concertgebouw Bruges rewarded the orchestra and Martijn with standing ovations. Further concerts took place in Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Ghent and DeSingel in Antwerp.

February 2022 | Jump-ins in Arnhem (NL) and Dresden (DE)

This month, Martijn will make his debut with "Phion - Orkest van Gelderland and Overijssel" and the "Freies Ensemble Dresden" with members of the Dresdner Philharmonie. In Arnhem, he substitutes for Ariane Matiakh on short notice, who had to withdraw due to illness, and takes over the program unchanged. It features Dvořaks Eighth Symphony, as well as Kaaja Saariaho's clarinet concerto D'om le vrai sens. Annelien Van Wauwe will play the solo part of the six-part hommage to the human senses.

At the end of the month, he will lead Schönberg's first chamber symphony with members of the Dresnder Philharmonie during a concert, dedicated to the memory of Erwin Schulhoff. More info can be found here


January 2022 | Martijn announced as Associate Conductor with Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen

Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen has announced that Martijn, who has been it's assistant conductor since 2018, will continue his relationship with the Ghent-based orchestra as "Associate Conductor". From season 2023/2024 on, he will lead the orchestra in one big symphonic production per season, around the lesser-known repertoire of Antonin Dvořak. Furthermore, he will remain responsible for the SOV Composers' Academy as well as several other projects. Read more here


December 2021 | Martijn signs with IMG Artists London for General Management

Martijn is thrilled to anounce his cooperation with IMG Artists London. Federico M. Benigni, which whom Martijn has worked with in the past year, will remain responsible for his general management.

October 2021 | First Prize at the German Conductors Award

On Saturday 23 October Martijn won the German Conductors Award 2021. In the final concert he conducted the WDR Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Gürzenich Orchestra together with singers of the opera ensemble and the opera studio of the Cologne Opera. Jury chairman Markus Stenz praised Martijn for his musicality, efficient rehearsal work and colourful interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin, which formed part of the final round. The first prize is awarded with €15,000. In addition, invitations to renowned orchestras in Germany, such as the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra or the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, among others, will follow.

June 2021 | Finalist at London and Rotterdam Competitions

Only two weeks after the Conductors' Academy with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Martijn was one of the twenty shortlisted candidates for the biennial Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, in which he reached the final round, after two elimination rounds. During the concert, which was broadcast by and which is available for replay using this link, Martijn led the London Symphony Orchestra in works by Verdi, Dvorak and Brahms. Another two weeks later, he was selected as one of the six "designate winners" of the inaugural International Conducting Competition Rotterdam. The finals of the latter will take place in May and June 2022, in which Martijn will lead the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the 18th century, amongst others. Banner 05
